Andhra Pradesh Farmers Oppose Seed Bill-2025, Seek State-Level Consultations
Farmer associations in Andhra Pradesh have voiced strong opposition to the Seed Bill-2025 proposed by the Central government, describing the legislation as pro-corporate and potentially detrimental to small and marginal farmers. Representatives of various farmer groups argued that the bill favors large seed companies at the expense of farmers’ rights and traditional agricultural practices.
The associations urged the State government to take a cautious approach and conduct comprehensive consultations with stakeholders, including farmers, agronomists, and cooperatives, before taking a formal position on the bill. They emphasized the need to safeguard farmers’ interests, ensure access to quality seeds at affordable prices, and protect indigenous seed varieties.
Officials from the farmer bodies warned that if their concerns are not addressed, the legislation could face widespread resistance in the state. They called on both state and central authorities to consider the potential socio-economic impact of the bill and to adopt policies that promote farmer welfare and sustainable agriculture.
