Assam Bangladeshi Muslim Population debate resurfaced after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a strong demographic claim. Speaking at a programme in Guwahati, Sarma said nearly 40 percent of Assam’s population consists of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. He added that the 2027 census would clearly establish this figure.

The Chief Minister referred to the 2011 census, which recorded Muslims as 34 percent of Assam’s population. He said only around three percent were Assamese Muslims. According to him, the remaining population traced its roots to Bangladesh. Sarma pointed out that no census took place in 2021. He claimed population growth trends indicate the figure could rise to 40 percent by 2027.

Sarma described the situation as alarming. He warned that Assam’s demographic balance faces serious pressure. He also said the issue impacts national security, not just the state. The Chief Minister claimed that many Bangladeshi-origin residents now enjoy legal status, which worries the state government.

The statement comes as the Assam government tightens action against illegal immigration. Sarma said district commissioners have received clear instructions. Authorities must act against declared foreigners and illegal immigrants. Police and border forces will assist in deportation to Bangladesh.

The government plans to use existing legal provisions to identify and expel illegal residents. Officials say enforcement will continue without compromise.
