In a major decision linked to educational reforms, the Assam government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approved making the history and geography of Assam compulsory subjects for students of Classes 6, 7, and 8. The move follows recommendations from a committee headed by Justice (Retd.) Biplab Kumar Sharma.
Announcing the decision on social media, CM Sarma said the aim is to ensure that children gain a deeper understanding of their state’s past, culture, identity, and geographical features. According to the Cabinet’s approval, students will now be required to appear for separate examinations in these subjects.
Under the new rule, students will take two different exams—one for history and one for geography—each carrying 50 marks. This curriculum will be implemented across all primary and upper-primary schools in the state.
The government believes that introducing state-specific content at the foundational stage will help promote awareness, pride, and a sense of belonging among the young generation in Assam. More detailed guidelines regarding textbooks and exam structure are expected to be issued soon.
