Police in Guwahati arrested Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora on Monday for possessing assets far beyond her known income. Bora, who joined the service in 2019, was posted as a circle officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district.
The Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell raided her Guwahati residence and seized Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth almost Rs 1 crore. Officials also recovered Rs 10 lakh in cash from her rented house in Barpeta.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Bora had been under surveillance for six months after complaints about her involvement in land scams. He alleged that she transferred Hindu land to suspicious individuals in exchange for money when she worked in the Barpeta revenue circle.
Sarma highlighted rampant corruption in revenue circles, especially in minority-dominated regions, and promised strict action against corrupt officers.
The Vigilance Cell also raided the house of her alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, who works at the Barpeta revenue office. Deka allegedly purchased multiple land properties with Bora’s help.
Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway. The arrest has sparked strong public interest and raised fresh concerns about corruption in Assam’s revenue system.
