Amit Kumar, better known as Bachcha Rai, was the key accused in the 2016 Bihar Board topper scam. The scam exposed fake toppers like Ruby Rai and Saurabh Shrestha, who failed to answer basic subject questions. This incident embarrassed the Bihar education system.
Bachcha Rai, then principal of VR College in Vaishali, was named the mastermind. The Enforcement Directorate seized crores of cash and land from him, linking him to money laundering and illegal construction. After spending time in jail, he secured bail.
Now, Bachcha Rai has joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM and declared himself as a candidate from Mahua in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. Mahua has turned into a hot seat, with RJD’s Mukesh Roshan facing challenges from Tej Pratap Yadav and now Bachcha Rai.
The big question is whether AIMIM will back a candidate with such a tainted record. Bachcha Rai’s comeback in Bihar politics shows how controversial figures still find space in the political arena. His entry will surely heat up Mahua’s election battle.
