Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Friday described West Bengal as a Bengali Hindu homeland, triggering a sharp political debate. He made the remarks at a BJP rally in Malda. Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress of encouraging communal unrest in Malda and Murshidabad during 2025.
He referred to incidents in Mothabari, Dhulian, and Samserganj. He alleged attacks on Hindu homes and shops. Adhikari said such violence must stop to restore peace. He also compared the Murshidabad lynching of a father and son with a recent killing in Bangladesh. He claimed both incidents reflected rising insecurity among Hindus.
The BJP leader accused the state government of restricting religious celebrations. He named Ram Navami, Durga Puja, and Kali Puja. He said authorities delay or deny permissions. Adhikari promised that a future BJP government would provide 200 days of rural employment. He positioned this against Trinamool’s 100-day Karmashree Prakalpa scheme.
Adhikari said police denied permission for his rally. He added that he approached the Calcutta High Court 104 times for such approvals. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya also attacked the Trinamool government. He alleged misuse of welfare funds. He defended the SIR process and accused the ruling party of blocking opposition activity.
