Centre will allow multiple airports in major cities: Rammohan Naidu
The Centre will allow multiple airports in major cities, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu said on Saturday, citing a sharp rise in air passenger traffic across the country. He said the Union government would review the existing policy that restricts airports within a 150-km radius.
The Minister explained that growing demand for air travel has made the current policy outdated. He said allowing more than one airport in major urban centres would help reduce congestion and improve passenger convenience.
Mr. Naidu expressed confidence that the Alluri Sitharama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram would play a key role in Andhra Pradesh’s development. He said the airport would strengthen trade links and boost exports from the State.
According to him, the new airport would also unlock tourism potential by improving access to coastal and tribal regions. Better connectivity, he said, would attract both domestic and international visitors.
The Minister noted that modern aviation infrastructure is essential for economic growth. He added that airports act as growth engines by supporting industries, logistics, and employment.
He assured that the Centre would work closely with State governments while revising the policy. He said decisions would focus on long-term demand, regional balance, and sustainable development.
