Cloud-Seeding Trials in Delhi Yield Negligible Rain, More Tests Planned
Delhi conducted its first cloud-seeding trials to reduce air pollution, led by IIT Kanpur in coordination with the Environment Department. The operation aimed to trigger artificial rainfall to settle airborne pollutants, but only negligible rain was recorded due to low moisture levels in the clouds. IIT Kanpur Director said the moisture content was around 15–20%, far below the required level for effective seeding. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa called the trial an important step toward combating pollution and announced that more trials would be carried out in the coming days. Experts noted that while cloud seeding can provide short-term relief, it cannot replace long-term solutions such as reducing vehicular emissions and industrial pollution. Authorities hope future attempts, under better weather conditions, will yield stronger results in improving Delhi’s air quality.
