CM Vijay shuts 717 wine shops across Tamil Nadu in a major decision aimed at improving public safety and social welfare. The order targets liquor outlets located close to temples, schools, colleges, and bus stands.
According to officials, CM Vijay shuts 717 wine shops that operate within a 500-metre radius of sensitive public places. Authorities must complete the closure process within two weeks. The move is one of the first major policy decisions taken after Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister.
Government data shows that 276 liquor shops near religious places, 186 near educational institutions, and 255 near bus stands will close. Officials say the step aims to reduce public disturbance and create safer surroundings for students and families.
Tamil Nadu currently runs thousands of TASMAC liquor outlets. The decision to shut these shops has triggered discussions about its social impact and the possible impact on state revenue.
