‘ Cobra Beat’: Bengaluru Police’s New Plan to Untangle City Traffic
The Bengaluru Traffic Police have introduced a new initiative called ‘Cobra Beat’ to address micro-level traffic congestion across the city. The program deploys specially trained police teams to monitor and manage traffic bottlenecks in real time, focusing on problem-prone stretches, junctions, and internal roads that often go unnoticed in broader traffic plans. Equipped with two-wheelers and communication devices, these ‘Cobra’ units will respond swiftly to developing snarls, coordinate with control rooms, and implement on-the-spot solutions. Officials said the initiative aims to enhance traffic flow efficiency and reduce commuter delays, particularly during peak hours. The project also involves data collection to identify recurring trouble spots and design long-term decongestion strategies. Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda stated that Cobra Beat reflects the department’s commitment to smarter, data-driven traffic management and improving daily commuting experiences in one of India’s most congested urban centres.
