Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Delhi as AQI Remains Poor; Temperatures to Fall 3°C in North India

Delhi streets covered in smog as residents face cold wave and poor air quality

Delhi is experiencing harsh winter conditions as a strong cold wave continues to affect the national capital, while air quality remains in the poor category. The combination of low temperatures, calm winds, and pollution has made mornings particularly uncomfortable for residents, with dense chill and smog lingering across several parts of the city.

As per official air quality data, Delhi’s AQI has stayed above safe limits, raising health concerns for sensitive groups such as children, senior citizens, and people suffering from asthma or heart ailments. Prolonged exposure to polluted air during cold weather is known to worsen respiratory problems, prompting authorities to advise caution and reduced outdoor activity.

Weather officials have warned that relief is unlikely in the immediate future. A further drop of nearly 3 degrees Celsius is expected across large parts of North India, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Cold winds from the north are likely to intensify the chill, especially during night and early morning hours.

Foggy conditions have also been reported in several areas, affecting visibility on roads and causing minor disruptions to traffic movement during peak hours. The stagnant atmospheric conditions are preventing pollutants from dispersing, resulting in persistent smog over the region.

Residents have been advised to take adequate precautions, including wearing warm clothing, avoiding early morning outdoor exercise, and using masks where necessary. Experts suggest that the cold wave conditions may continue for the next few days, keeping temperatures low and air quality under pressure.

With winter tightening its grip, Delhi and neighboring states are bracing for more cold days ahead as authorities closely monitor both weather and pollution levels.
