Colombia Airstrikes Kill 19 Guerrillas in Amazon Region
Colombia’s military reported that airstrikes in the Amazon region killed 19 guerrillas on November 10. The operation targeted a dissident faction of the former FARC, a rebel group that did not sign the 2016 peace accord and has been linked to drug trafficking, extortion, and illegal mining.
Officials said the airstrikes also led to the capture of one individual and the seizure of some military equipment. The operation was carried out in response to an “imminent” threat against army targets.
President Gustavo Petro reportedly ordered the strikes, reflecting a tougher security stance amid criticism of previous measures to curb rebel activity. The military emphasized that the offensive was part of ongoing efforts to neutralize armed groups that continue to operate in remote regions, threaten civilians, and undermine national security.
Authorities continue to monitor the area to prevent further guerrilla movements and ensure the safety of local populations.
