The scam has surfaced in several blocks of Katihar district. Fraudsters claim that the government has released honorarium payments for mukhiyas and ward members. They ask victims to share bank account numbers, Aadhaar details, and OTPs to process the payment.
In some cases, scammers also send fake links through WhatsApp or SMS. Experts warn that clicking these links can hack mobile phones and allow criminals to steal money from bank accounts within minutes.
Cyber police have started tracking suspicious numbers. Officials suspect that an organised gang has accessed the contact details of local representatives. Authorities have urged public representatives to stay alert and avoid sharing personal information or OTPs over phone calls.
