Cyclone Montha Weakens After Landfall Near Kakinada; Heavy Rains Continue in Andhra Pradesh
Cyclone Montha made landfall on India’s east coast late Tuesday, crossing the coast of Andhra Pradesh near Kakinada. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported winds of 90-100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h during landfall. After crossing the coast, the system weakened into a cyclonic storm while moving north-northwest across coastal Andhra. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high waves are expected to cause flooding, uproot trees, and disrupt power and communication lines. Evacuations were carried out in low-lying areas, and warnings were issued for multiple districts. Neighboring states remain on alert as authorities prepared relief and rescue measures. The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. Though the storm has weakened, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha over the next 24 hours as Cyclone Montha moves inland.
