A massive tragedy hit southeast Mexico City on Wednesday when a gas tanker overturned and exploded under a highway overpass near the Iztapalapa–Chalco border. The tanker carried more than 13,000 gallons of fuel and burst into flames, sending fireballs across the road and engulfing dozens of vehicles.
The explosion killed at least three people and injured more than 70 others. Many victims suffered severe burns, including children. A baby and a two-year-old remain in critical condition. Witnesses described terrifying scenes as people were trapped in burning cars, some with burns covering nearly their entire bodies.
Firefighters battled the blaze and managed to control it after about 25 to 30 vehicles were destroyed. Rescue teams worked overnight, moving the injured to hospitals across Mexico City, where several remain in intensive care.
Officials revealed that the tanker had no valid insurance or legal paperwork to transport fuel. Although the truck carried the logo of Silza, the company denied ownership. Authorities are now investigating responsibility.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada declared an emergency and promised full medical aid. President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences and praised first responders for preventing an even bigger disaster.
