Delhi Demolition Drive Near Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque Sparks Clash, Police Injured After Stone Pelting

Police using tear gas during demolition drive near Faiz-e-Elahi mosque in Old Delhi

Delhi demolition mosque clash broke out early Wednesday morning after a demolition drive near the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque in Old Delhi’s Turkman Gate area turned violent, leaving several police personnel injured and forcing authorities to use tear gas to control the situation.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched the demolition operation following orders from the Delhi High Court to clear alleged encroachments on public land near the mosque and surrounding areas. The drive began in the early hours with a heavy police presence, as officials anticipated resistance in the densely populated locality.

As bulldozers moved in to remove unauthorised structures, a group of locals gathered at the site and raised objections to the action. The protest soon escalated when miscreants allegedly started pelting stones at police teams and civic officials. At least five police personnel sustained injuries during the clashes, officials said.

In response to the growing unrest, police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Additional security forces were rushed to the spot, and the area was sealed off to restore law and order. Senior officers monitored the situation, which was brought under control after some time.

Officials clarified that the demolition was part of a court-mandated drive targeting illegal constructions, including commercial buildings and encroachments on roads and public pathways. They stressed that the action was not directed at any religious structure but focused solely on unauthorised developments.

Meanwhile, representatives of the mosque’s management committee expressed concern over the demolition, claiming that parts of the land in question are legally associated with the mosque. Legal petitions have been filed, and the matter is expected to come up for further hearing in court.

The Delhi demolition mosque clash has once again highlighted the challenges authorities face while enforcing court orders in sensitive urban areas. Security remains heightened in the locality to prevent any further disturbances.
