Direct Election of Chandigarh Mayor Urged by Manish Tewari

Direct Election of Chandigarh Mayor

Direct election of Chandigarh Mayor is necessary to strengthen civic governance, Member of Parliament Manish Tewari said on January 28, 2026. He called for major reforms in the city’s municipal system while addressing the media in Chandigarh.

Tewari pointed out that Chandigarh elects a Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor every year. Since 1996, the city has seen nearly 90 office-bearers. He said this system weakens leadership and limits long-term planning.

Direct election of Chandigarh Mayor with a fixed five-year term would bring stability and accountability, he argued. Tewari stressed that capable individuals have held these posts, yet the structure restricts their impact. Short tenures prevent effective decision-making.

He linked the city’s financial crisis and governance delays to the current model. According to him, one-year terms do not allow elected leaders enough time or authority to solve civic problems.

Tewari revealed that he introduced a Private Member’s Bill in the Lok Sabha on December 5, 2025. The Bill seeks a five-year tenure and enhanced executive and financial powers for the Mayor and Deputy Mayors.

He urged all political parties to support the proposal beyond party lines. During the Budget Session, he plans to use every parliamentary option to advance the reform. Without change, he warned, mayoral elections will remain symbolic.
