Engage the Taliban, But Do Not Recognise Their Regime
India must continue engaging with the Taliban to safeguard its strategic and humanitarian interests in Afghanistan, but formal recognition of the regime would be premature and counterproductive. Diplomatic engagement — both bilaterally and through regional and international forums — is essential to ensure stability, monitor security threats, and support the Afghan people. However, New Delhi should use these channels to press the Taliban to uphold basic human rights, especially those of women, minorities, and political dissidents. Recognising the Taliban without tangible progress on these fronts would legitimize an undemocratic regime that continues to suppress freedoms. Instead, India should work with global partners to push for inclusive governance, humanitarian aid access, and counter-terror cooperation. A balanced policy of cautious engagement without endorsement best serves both India’s national interests and Afghanistan’s long-term peace prospects.
