GHMC Ward Expansion Sparks Strong Political Objections

GHMC ward delimitation row intensifies as corporators meet under mayor to discuss objections over ward expansion and boundaries.

Strong objections are being raised over the Telangana government’s preliminary notification to increase GHMC wards from 150 to 300. In response, a special council meeting will be held today at 10:30 am at the GHMC headquarters. The meeting will be chaired by Mayor Gadwal Vijaya Lakshmi, according to officials.

During the meeting, corporators and ex-officio members are expected to voice their objections and suggestions on ward delimitation. The issue has triggered wide political debate across parties. The council session is being viewed as crucial in understanding collective concerns.

Earlier, the Telangana government decided to merge 27 municipalities located within the Outer Ring Road limits into GHMC. Following this decision, a preliminary delimitation notification was issued on December 9. Officials stated that ward boundaries were drawn based on population figures. A deadline of December 17 was given for objections and suggestions.

So far, more than 1,300 objections have been submitted. Meanwhile, BRS and BJP leaders alleged that the delimitation process was carried out in an unscientific and unilateral manner. They claimed that population balance, geography, and natural boundaries were ignored. Hence, the special council meeting has been convened to gather views from all parties.
