Greenland, Denmark Reject U.S. Takeover Claims; PM Warns of NATO Risks
Greenland and Denmark have dismissed concerns over a potential U.S. takeover following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that any attempt by the United States to acquire Greenland would be unacceptable and could jeopardize NATO, highlighting the strategic importance of the island in international security.
Frederiksen stressed that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its status is protected under international law. She emphasized that discussions about sovereignty, security, and economic interests must respect Greenland’s self-governance and democratic institutions.
Greenland’s officials also rejected the notion of a U.S. purchase, calling it unrealistic and unnecessary. They underscored the island’s ongoing collaboration with multiple countries on strategic and scientific projects while maintaining its ties with Denmark.
The statements come amid renewed global attention on Greenland’s strategic location and natural resources, including rare earth minerals, which have drawn interest from major powers.
