IISc Director: AI Can Assist, But Cannot Replace Doctors in Healthcare

Indian Institute of Science director Govindan Rangarajan emphasised that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot replace doctors, underscoring the vital role of human empathy and clinical judgement in healthcare. While acknowledging AI’s potential in analysing medical data and streamlining administrative processes, he noted that it lacks the “human touch essential for compassionate treatment”.

Rangarajan also urged young doctors to engage in research and continuous learning so they can critically evaluate emerging medical technologies and products. He said that while AI tools will increasingly support doctors, they cannot replicate doctor‑patient interaction, emotional understanding or nuanced decision‑making. His comments came amid growing discussion about AI’s role in health care and the need to balance innovation with preserving trust and care in the doctor‑patient relationship.
