New Delhi: After Cyclone Senyar moved away from the Indian coastline, a new weather threat is developing rapidly over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert stating that a deepening low-pressure system in the region is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours. Once it reaches cyclonic strength, it will be named Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, a name suggested by Yemen, inspired by the famous Detwah Lagoon on Socotra Island.
According to IMD, the system is strengthening over the southwest Bay of Bengal, the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. The potential cyclone could trigger heavy rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent sea conditions along the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh.
The weather office has issued yellow and orange alerts for several Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, and Thanjavur. Fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. IMD added that the system is moving north-northwestward and is showing clear signs of intensification.
Authorities have increased preparedness in coastal areas to prevent disruptions and ensure safety as the system advances toward land.
