India and Mauritius have taken a major step to strengthen ties with a $655 million economic package and seven new agreements. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after talks with Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi, announced that both nations will begin bilateral trade in local currencies following the successful launch of UPI and RuPay cards in Mauritius.
The package will support at least 10 development projects. These include upgrading ports, airports, and roads, along with setting up new schools and hospitals. Modi clarified that the package is not just assistance but an investment in a shared future.
The agreements will expand cooperation in education, power, hydrography, and space research. A key pact covers hydrography, where India and Mauritius will work together on joint surveys, navigation charts, and data sharing for Mauritius’ exclusive economic zone.
Modi called India and Mauritius “two nations with one destiny.” He also congratulated Mauritius on the Chagos agreement, describing it as a historic victory for the island’s sovereignty. Modi emphasized India’s consistent support for decolonization and its strong backing of Mauritius’ independence.
