India is weighing the option of buying more S-400 or the latest S-500 missile defence systems from Russia after the strong performance of its existing arsenal during Operation Sindoor, according to a report by The Print.
Defence and security officials confirmed that both systems are under active discussion. A senior source said the S-400 proved to be a “game-changer” during the operation, with huge deterrence power.
India had signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 for five S-400 units. Four have already been delivered, and the final one is expected by September 2026. The contract also allows India to buy five more units on similar terms.
During Operation Sindoor, the S-400 intercepted five Pakistani fighter jets and destroyed an AEW&C/ELINT aircraft at around 300 km range. Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh called this the longest surface-to-air kill ever recorded.
India has also shown long-standing interest in the S-500 system, which can destroy ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and even satellites. With a range of up to 600 km, it is designed to tackle future threats. Russia has hinted that India could be its first foreign buyer once exports open.
