India Must Balance Ties Without Drifting from the West: Landau on US Tariffs
Amid rising tensions over India’s continued import of Russian oil, foreign policy expert Richard Landau has cautioned that India’s geopolitical balancing should not strain its ties with the West. His remarks come in the wake of potential U.S. tariffs linked to India’s energy trade with Moscow.
Landau noted that while India’s independent foreign policy is understandable, its growing global stature as a stabilising force could sometimes put it at odds with Western interests. “Strategic autonomy is important, but overcorrection could complicate partnerships that India deeply values,” he warned.
He emphasised that the West sees India as a key partner in maintaining global order, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. As New Delhi navigates complex global alliances, Landau urged caution in ensuring that pragmatic choices do not lead to unintended diplomatic rifts.
His comments highlight the delicate balance India must maintain between its traditional allies and newer partnerships.
