India Upgrades Kabul Mission, Strengthens Ties

India Afghanistan relations strengthened as New Delhi upgrades Kabul mission, provides aid, and boosts trade and development cooperation.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi on Friday. They discussed India’s support for Afghanistan’s development, bilateral trade, territorial integrity, and people-to-people ties. India also handed over five ambulances as part of a 20-ambulance aid package.

Jaishankar announced that India’s Technical Mission in Kabul will be upgraded to the status of the Embassy. He emphasised India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty and independence. The ministers reviewed six new developmental projects, provision of medical equipment, vaccines, and rehabilitation support for earthquake-affected areas.

Both leaders highlighted boosting trade and education ties. India will expand opportunities for Afghan students to study in Indian universities. Additional flights between Kabul and New Delhi were welcomed to enhance connectivity. Jaishankar also raised concerns over the forced repatriation of Afghan refugees, promising assistance in constructing residences.

Muttaqi expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian support during the recent earthquake and called India a historic friend. He assured that Afghanistan will not allow its territory to be used against other countries. The two nations agreed to strengthen bilateral relations through continued cooperation in development, trade, and humanitarian assistance.
