Indian Navy Chief Strengthens Ties with Sri Lanka

India and Sri Lanka boost maritime and defence ties to enhance security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo to strengthen maritime and defence cooperation. His four-day visit began on Tuesday. The talks focused on security, training, and capacity-building between the two nations.

Both leaders discussed operational engagement, multilateral forums, and new capacity-building projects. Amarasuriya stressed the ocean’s strategic value and called for joint efforts to protect shared maritime resources. They agreed to expand cooperation through trust and regular exchanges.

The Sri Lankan leader highlighted the need to counter marine pollution, illegal fishing, drug trafficking, and terrorism at sea. She also urged stronger coordination for search-and-rescue missions and better information sharing. Training ties between the two navies will also grow.

Admiral Tripathi will speak at the 12th Galle Dialogue 2025 on the theme “Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics.” His visit underscores joint efforts to deepen strategic understanding and ensure peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
