January Cold Wave Maharashtra: IMD Warns of Colder Days and Nights Across the State

Cold January morning in Maharashtra as temperatures drop below normal levels

January cold wave Maharashtra conditions are expected to be harsher than usual this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting colder-than-normal days and nights across several parts of the state. The weather agency has warned residents to prepare for a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially during night and early morning hours.

According to IMD officials, minimum temperatures across interior Maharashtra, including Vidarbha, Marathwada, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra, are likely to fall below seasonal averages. Even coastal regions, including Mumbai and Konkan, may experience cooler nights compared to previous years, though the drop will be more pronounced in inland districts.

Meteorologists attribute the colder conditions to northern winds and the influence of western disturbances affecting northern India, which are pushing cold air southwards. Clear skies and dry weather patterns are also expected to contribute to lower night-time temperatures during January.

Several districts in Vidarbha have already reported a steady decline in minimum temperatures, with some areas recording single-digit readings. Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops, as prolonged cold conditions may impact sensitive crops such as vegetables, fruits, and pulses.

Health experts have also urged people, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses, to remain cautious during colder nights. Exposure to low temperatures can increase the risk of seasonal ailments such as colds, flu, and breathing difficulties.

The IMD has stated that while no extreme cold wave warnings have been issued yet, the possibility of brief cold wave conditions cannot be ruled out if temperatures continue to fall sharply. Citizens have been advised to follow weather updates regularly and take necessary precautions.

As January progresses, the colder-than-normal weather is expected to persist across Maharashtra, making it one of the chillier starts to the year in recent times.
