IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Southern, Northeastern and Eastern India

Flooded street in India during heavy monsoon rainfall as IMD issues alerts for southern, northeastern and eastern states.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a fresh alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several regions, as persistent monsoon systems continue to influence weather patterns.

The forecast covers southern states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, along with parts of northeastern India and eastern states including Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar. These areas are likely to witness intense spells of rain over the next few days.

Officials explained that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, combined with strong monsoon currents, is driving the heavy rainfall. The conditions may trigger flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and transport disruptions in vulnerable zones.

Local administrations have been directed to remain on high alert and prepare evacuation and relief measures for low-lying regions. Authorities also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and urged residents in hilly terrain to remain cautious about landslides and blocked roads.

While the rains remain vital for agriculture, especially during the kharif season, officials warned that uneven distribution and extreme intensity could strain both rural communities and urban infrastructure. State disaster response teams stand ready to assist if the situation worsens.

The IMD said it will continue monitoring conditions closely and release updated forecasts. Citizens should follow official advisories, limit travel during heavy downpours, and stay updated through IMD bulletins.
