In a unique and compassionate gesture, champion badminton player Jwala Gutta from Hyderabad has donated 14,500 ml of breast milk to help premature and critically ill infants.
She contributed 70 packets of breast milk, totaling 14.5 litres, through the Chennai-based voluntary organisation Amirtham Foundation. The donation went to the government-run Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children (ICH) in Egmore, Chennai.
Jwala received widespread praise for her generosity. The Amirtham Foundation posted on X, “Champions are not made in stadiums but also in milk banks.” Sharing her thoughts, Jwala wrote, “Breast milk saves lives. For premature and sick babies, donor milk can be life-changing. If you are able to donate, you could be a hero to a family in need.”
The Amirtham Foundation, a group of over 5,000 lactating mothers, also expressed gratitude, noting the collection of 70 milk packets from Jwala. They highlighted how her act would inspire many more women to step forward.
Doctors say donor milk is often the difference between life and death for premature babies whose mothers cannot produce enough milk. Jwala’s contribution stands as a shining example of how athletes can make a social impact beyond sports.
