Karnataka Proposes 5% Reservation for Disabled in Private Jobs and Education
Karnataka is set to strengthen disability rights with a new draft legislation proposing expanded job and education quotas in the private sector. The Karnataka Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Employment and Education Bill, 2025 seeks to mandate a 5% reservation for persons with disabilities in all private establishments that employ 20 or more people.
The bill aims to address longstanding concerns about limited opportunities for people with disabilities in employment and education. It also proposes mechanisms for monitoring compliance, periodic reporting by companies, and penalties for non-adherence. Advocates say this move will significantly enhance inclusivity and economic participation for disabled individuals, particularly in urban job markets.
The government is inviting public comments on the draft before introducing it in the state legislature. Officials highlighted that the bill aligns with national policies on disability rights and emphasizes equitable access, skill development, and career growth opportunities for persons with disabilities in both private workplaces and educational institutions.
