Thiruvananthapuram is witnessing a political controversy after BJP councillor K Anil Kumar of Thirumala ward was found dead by suicide at his ward council office on September 20. Police have registered a case of unnatural death, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
In his suicide note, Kumar reportedly wrote, “I have helped our people. But they delayed in repaying the amount,” pointing to financial difficulties related to his leadership of a local cooperative society.
The CPI(M) has alleged that BJP negligence contributed to his death. CPM district secretary and MLA V Joy said Kumar’s reference to “our people” indicated party colleagues. “It was because the BJP leadership did not intervene or support him that Anil had to take this extreme step. He helped everyone, but no one helped him. The BJP must answer to its workers instead of blaming CPI(M) or police,” he added.
The BJP, however, dismissed these claims, stating that Kumar’s note referred only to cooperative society members, not party colleagues. BJP leader V Muraleedharan said, “When he says ‘our people,’ it refers to members of the cooperative society. Money is lent based on rules and trust. There is no mention of BJP in the note, so politicizing it is unfair.”
K Anil Kumar’s death has shocked residents and party workers alike. As the investigation continues, authorities are looking into financial records and other factors related to the cooperative society to determine the exact circumstances.
The K Anil Kumar suicide has triggered a political war of words in Kerala, highlighting tensions between CPM and BJP while raising broader questions about support and accountability for elected representatives in local governance.
