Madras High Court Stays Order Granting Censor Certificate to Vijay’s Jana Nayagan

The Madras High Court on Friday evening stayed an earlier order directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a U/A 16+ censor certificate to Jana Nayagan, starring actor Vijay. The interim stay was issued by a Division Bench headed by the Chief Justice, hours after a single judge had passed the directive in the morning.

The single judge’s order came on a petition filed by the film’s producers, who contended that the CBFC had unreasonably delayed certification despite the movie completing all formalities. The judge had observed that certification could not be withheld indefinitely and directed the board to issue the certificate.

However, the CBFC challenged the order before the Chief Justice’s Bench, arguing that certain issues raised by the examining committee required further consideration. Accepting the plea, the Bench stayed the operation of the single judge’s order and posted the matter for further hearing. The stay has put the film’s planned release schedule in uncertainty.
