The Man Extorts Money Impersonating case shocked Berhampur on Monday. Locals reported that the Man Extorts Money Impersonating a police constable stood on Padaravalli Chhak along State Highway-17 and collected cash from motorists. He acted like an on-duty officer and carried out illegal vehicle checks without fear until real police arrived.
Police identified the accused as Manoj Swain from Narayanpur village. He spotted the Berhampur Sadar Police team and tried to escape, but officers chased and caught him. Locals said he demanded money confidently, which made many drivers believe he was genuine. His uniform and behaviour helped him gain quick trust.
During questioning, police seized a toy gun, a police uniform, and other items. Officers believe he used these to create a convincing image of a constable. Investigators later found that Manoj rented a house in Lathi and introduced himself as a police officer to the landlord and neighbours.
Residents now demand stricter monitoring of public roads and identity checks for enforcement personnel. Police assured stronger patrolling on the highway to prevent similar crimes. The arrest has raised concerns about how easily criminals can misuse uniforms to exploit innocent people.
