Manipur has returned to headlines after months of calm under President’s Rule. Fresh tension was reported in Bishnupur district.Unknown gunmen attacked an Assam Rifles convoy near Sabal Lekai village close to Nambol. The ambush shocked residents and security agencies alike.Two soldiers were killed instantly in the firing. They were identified as Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap. Five others were injured and shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal.
The attack happened on National Highway-2 when the convoy was moving from Imphal towards Bishnupur. The site is just eight kilometres from Imphal airport.The location of the attack raised serious security concerns. Many questioned how militants could strike so close to key installations.
No group has claimed responsibility so far. The Manipur government and security forces condemned the incident. Officials promised strict action to identify and punish the attackers.The ambush underlined the fragile peace in the state. It showed how armed groups remain active despite heavy deployment. Citizens fear further violence if urgent steps are not taken.
