Mizoram Named Ginger Capital India

Stakeholders meeting in New Delhi for Mizoram ginger consultation with Chief Minister Lalduhoma and NITI Aayog officials

New Delhi/Aizawl, November 25, 2025:
NITI Aayog has recommended that Mizoram be recognised as the “Ginger Capital of India”, emphasising the preservation of the crop’s organic quality while promoting modern processing technologies and expanding both domestic and international market reach.

The announcement followed a high-level stakeholder consultation titled “Stakeholders Consultation for Mizoram Ginger Produce”, organised jointly by the Mizoram government and NITI Aayog at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Monday. Over 60 participants from government departments, Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs), entrepreneurs, and industry representatives attended the session, focusing on strengthening value chains, improving processing facilities, and boosting market linkages for ginger.

Addressing the participants, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted that the state has emerged as a major ginger producer over the past two years, with produce recognised for its superior quality. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and investors, noting the provision of a Minimum Support Price of Rs 50 per kilogram. The Chief Minister also spoke on reforms in state industry and investment policies aimed at encouraging value-added agriculture and broader agribusiness opportunities.

NITI Aayog Member Dr V.K. Paul chaired the inaugural session and provided strategic guidance for strengthening the ginger value chain. Other key dignitaries included NITI Aayog Additional Secretary Rohit Kumar, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Food Processing Industries Secretary A.P. Das Joshi, Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, and Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, among others.

The consultation encouraged open discussions on expanding trade linkages, boosting processing and export potential, and creating a sustainable ecosystem for ginger farmers. Stakeholders also explored technological innovations in cultivation, organic certification standards, and financial support mechanisms to benefit small-scale producers.

The state government announced the “Ginger Buyer–Seller Meet” in Aizawl on December 5–6 to further facilitate business collaborations and market linkages. With coordinated efforts from the state government, NITI Aayog, and industry stakeholders, Mizoram’s ginger sector is poised to achieve national and international recognition, improving farmer incomes, creating employment, and strengthening the state’s agricultural exports.
