The Central Government has approved an increase in MGNREGA workdays from 100 to 150 for rural households in Jammu and Kashmir, providing major relief to villages affected by floods, cloudbursts and landslides. The decision follows recommendations by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department for the 2025–26 financial year, citing rising demand for work due to natural calamities.

An official statement said that for FY 2025–26, families in disaster-hit rural areas will receive an additional 50 days of employment under MGNREGA, beyond the existing 100-day guarantee. The move aims to strengthen livelihood security where public infrastructure and incomes have been heavily impacted.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving the enhanced work limit. In a late-night post, Sinha said the decision would significantly help families in the 1,962 flood-affected panchayats of Jammu and Kashmir whose livelihoods have suffered due to recurring natural disasters.
