The Income Tax Department said on Monday that more than 7 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed so far for the financial year 2024-25. The rush came as the deadline for filing approached on September 15.

Many taxpayers and chartered accountants reported glitches on the e-filing portal. Complaints included issues with logging in, uploading returns, and making tax payments. Some users also faced problems downloading their Annual Information Statement (AIS).

Despite these complaints, the department has not extended the deadline. It clarified that the last date to file ITRs without penalty remains September 15, 2025, for those who do not require account audits. Returns filed after this date will attract penalties.

Officials urged taxpayers to rely only on updates from the official @IncomeTaxIndia handle. They also dismissed rumours about a deadline extension, calling such posts “fake statements.

Responding to users, the department said the portal is working fine and advised clearing browser cache or using a different browser if problems occur. Last year, 7.28 crore ITRs were filed by July 31. This year, the number has already crossed 7 crore and is still increasing.
