Mumbai Rain Alert: Schools Shut in Palghar Amid Heavy Downpour

Heavy rain lashes Mumbai streets as IMD issues red alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as heavy rains continue to lash the state for the third consecutive day. As of early Monday (September 29), Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Nashik, Raigad and Pune were under a red alert, with forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

Mumbai has been witnessing continuous downpours since Saturday night, causing waterlogging in several areas. Between 8 am and 1 pm on Sunday alone, the city recorded over 47 mm of rainfall, while its western suburbs received more than 53 mm. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Palghar district remains one of the worst affected areas. In response to the IMD’s red alert, District Collector Manik Gursal announced a holiday for all government, private, and municipal schools, including Anganwadis and Zilla Parishad schools, on Monday to ensure student safety. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow official advisories as heavy rains are likely to persist across Maharashtra until October 3.

In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall has claimed five lives across the state—two in Ahilyanagar and one each in Nashik, Jalna, and Yavatmal. Over 11,000 people, including 7,200 from flood-hit Marathwada, have been relocated to safer places as rescue operations continue. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde have reviewed relief measures and instructed district officials to provide immediate assistance to affected families.

The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall across Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, and Kolhapur ghats over the next few days, keeping the administration on high alert.
