Mumbai is set to introduce its much-awaited water metro service, offering commuters a faster and scenic mode of transport at fares comparable to AC local train tickets. The project aims to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity across coastal and suburban areas of the city.
According to officials, the upcoming water metro will operate across key routes connecting parts of Mumbai, including South Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and nearby coastal zones. The service is expected to significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters who currently rely on overcrowded roads and suburban trains.
One of the major highlights of the project is its affordable pricing. Authorities plan to keep ticket fares similar to AC local train rates, making the service accessible to regular passengers rather than just tourists. The water metro will feature modern, air-conditioned ferries equipped with comfortable seating, safety systems and digital ticketing facilities.
Officials said the project will initially begin with selected routes and gradually expand based on commuter demand. Dedicated terminals and improved jetty infrastructure are being developed to ensure smooth boarding and seamless connectivity with existing transport systems like metro rail and suburban trains.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader push toward sustainable urban mobility. Water-based transport is expected to reduce pressure on Mumbai’s congested roads, lower travel time and offer an eco-friendly alternative for daily travel.
Authorities also highlighted that safety measures, including surveillance systems, trained crew and emergency response mechanisms, will be in place before the service becomes fully operational. Trial runs and infrastructure upgrades are currently underway.
Once launched, the Mumbai Water Metro is expected to transform urban commuting by providing residents with a reliable, affordable and comfortable travel option across the city’s waterways.
