NASA astronaut Sunita Williams retires after distinguished career
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has retired from the US space agency, with her retirement taking effect at the end of December, NASA announced. She is one of the most respected astronauts in NASA’s history and is known for her long and successful career in human spaceflight.
Sunita Williams flew to space twice and spent a total of more than 300 days aboard the International Space Station. She also carried out several spacewalks and set records during her missions. Her work helped scientists better understand life and work in space.
NASA’s new administrator, Jared Isaacman, called her a “trailblazer in human spaceflight” and praised her dedication, leadership, and achievements. He said she inspired many young people, especially women, to choose careers in science and space exploration.
Born to an Indian-American family, Sunita Williams became a role model across the world. NASA officials said her contributions would be remembered for many years, and they wished her success in her future plans.
