Nepal Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel urges calm amid political crisis, appealing to citizens to protect public and private property. His call came just hours after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Paudel resigned on Tuesday.
The Army announced it would take charge of security operations from 10 pm. General Sigdel asked protesters to step forward for dialogue instead of violence. “Some groups are taking undue advantage of the situation and causing harm to ordinary people,” the Army said.
Nepal Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel urges calm amid political crisis as youth-led protests intensify. Demonstrators have stormed homes of ministers and even attacked the President’s residence. At least 21 people have died, and over 100 have been injured in clashes.
Born in Rupandehi in 1967, General Sigdel became the 45th Chief of Army Staff in August 2024. A decorated officer with international peacekeeping experience, he has also studied in Nepal, India, and China. He played key roles during the Covid crisis and has been recognized with national honors.
Reports suggest General Sigdel advised Oli to resign after violent crackdowns failed to stop protests demanding action against corruption and a social media ban.
