Nepal Floods and Landslides Kill 42

Nepal floods and landslides

Heavy rains in Nepal have caused deadly floods and landslides, killing at least 42 people, officials reported. Five more people are missing as rescue operations continue.

The eastern district of Illam suffered the most, with 37 people losing their lives due to landslides. Local authorities said overnight downpours triggered the disasters. Blocked roads made it hard for rescue teams to reach affected areas, so many workers are traveling on foot.

In the capital, Kathmandu, swollen rivers flooded nearby settlements. Security personnel used helicopters and motorboats to help people trapped by rising waters. Landslides also blocked highways and disrupted flights, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded, many returning from the Hindu festival of Dashain.

Monsoon rains, which usually fall between June and September, often cause widespread damage in South Asia. Experts warn that climate change has increased the frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of these floods and landslides, making them even more dangerous.

Authorities continue their efforts to rescue people and clear blocked roads, urging residents to stay alert and move to safer areas as heavy rainfall continues.
