Nepal Inquiry Commission Stops Ex-PM K.P. Oli from Traveling Abroad

Nepal Inquiry Commission restricts key leaders from travel amid GenZ protest investigation.

Nepal’s inquiry commission investigating the recent GenZ protests has barred former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak from leaving the country. Former Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi, ex-National Investigation Department chief Hutaraj Thapa, and former Kathmandu Chief District Officer Chhabi Rijal also face travel restrictions.

The commission said these leaders are under investigation and may be called for questioning anytime. Authorities were instructed to prevent them from leaving Kathmandu Valley without permission.

During the first day of GenZ protests on September 8-9, police firing killed at least 19 people nationwide. In the following days, over 70 more died due to injuries or arson attacks. Protesters demand accountability for those responsible.

The inquiry commission, led by former Special Court Chairperson Gauri Bahadur Karki, will examine human and material losses, identify causes, and submit a detailed report with recommendations. It will also suggest an action plan to implement its findings.

The protests caused widespread property damage, hitting both government and private buildings. The government estimated public infrastructure losses at over NPR 100 billion, while private sector damages exceeded NPR 80 billion. The interim government, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, aims to hold House of Representatives elections on March 5 next year, as part of the efforts to stabilize the country.
