The violent Gen-Z protests in Nepal, which left nearly 20 people dead, are now beginning to affect neighboring India. Authorities have tightened security along the India–Nepal border while flight operations between the two countries have been disrupted due to the ongoing unrest.
Officials confirmed that areas in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar bordering Nepal have been placed on high alert. Additional paramilitary forces have been deployed to prevent illegal crossings and maintain law and order. “We are monitoring the situation closely. No major infiltration has been reported, but precautionary measures are essential,” a senior security official said.
Flight services between Kathmandu and several Indian cities, including Delhi and Kolkata, were hit as Nepalese airports faced operational delays amid heightened security checks. Airlines reported cancellations and rescheduling of flights, affecting hundreds of passengers on both sides.
The unrest in Nepal was triggered by the government’s controversial social media restrictions and corruption allegations, which provoked massive demonstrations led largely by students and young professionals. The protests, which turned violent last week, forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign, creating a political vacuum in the Himalayan nation.
Indian officials are particularly concerned about the economic and security implications. Border towns in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh depend heavily on cross-border trade, which has slowed since the protests intensified. Traders reported delays in the movement of goods, while transporters warned of rising costs if disruptions persist.
New Delhi has urged restraint and emphasized the need for peace in Nepal, stressing that stability in the neighboring country is directly linked to India’s own security and economic interests. With the situation still volatile, Indian agencies remain on alert for any escalation.
