Nepal is seeing massive protests after the government banned 26 social media apps. Thousands of demonstrators marched to parliament in Kathmandu. Security forces used tear gas, and the army was deployed. A curfew is now in place in parts of the capital.
The movement is led by Gen Z youths and students under the “Gen-J” banner. Protests also spread to other cities, including Biratnagar. Young people carried flags and placards, chanting slogans against the government. Some stormed into parliament.
Officials said the ban targeted foreign platforms that had not registered locally. They claimed many were misused. But the decision sparked strong anger among the youth. Protesters waved national flags and sang patriotic songs. Placards read “Freedom of Speech is Our Right” and “Remove the Ban First.” Even school students joined, showing unity across generations.
Security has been tightened near the Prime Minister’s residence and Rashtrapati Bhavan. Authorities hinted that talks on lifting the ban may happen soon. Still, the protests grow larger each day. The unrest shows how strongly Nepal’s youth oppose restrictions on their freedom of expression.
