The Centre has informed the Lok Sabha that more than 2,900 government schools in Assam have been merged with nearby institutions over the last five years to optimise resources and strengthen educational outcomes.

Responding to a query on December 1, Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary clarified that no government or provincialised schools in the state have been closed. Instead, 2,774 elementary schools and 206 secondary schools were merged or amalgamated during this period.

Chaudhary stated that the restructuring was carried out under the Shiksha Khetra Scheme, which permits merging schools with low or non-sustainable enrolment, or those functioning on the same campus. The aim, he said, is to ensure efficient use of manpower, infrastructure, and learning resources while improving the overall academic environment.

The Minister added that the process focuses on strengthening school education delivery without reducing access for students.
