Pakistan has strongly denied US President Donald Trump’s allegation that it is secretly conducting underground nuclear tests.
A senior Pakistani official told CBS News that Islamabad “was not the first to carry out nuclear tests and will not be the first to resume them.”
Trump, in an interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes, claimed that countries including Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan are testing their nuclear weapons out of public view. He said, “They test way underground, where people don’t know exactly what’s happening. You feel a little bit of a vibration.”
The official reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its long-standing moratorium on nuclear testing. Islamabad has maintained this stance since 1998, despite not signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
The United States last conducted a nuclear test in 1992, while Russia and China ended theirs in 1990 and 1996, respectively. North Korea remains the only country known to have tested nuclear weapons in recent decades.
Pakistan emphasized that it remains committed to responsible nuclear behavior and regional stability amid renewed global testing concerns.
