Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a major political rally in West Bengal on December 20 as the state moves closer to the 2026 Assembly elections. The rally will take place in Taherpur, located in Nadia district, a region that holds strong electoral and symbolic importance.

PM Modi’s visit comes at a time when the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has intensified its opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Political observers expect the Prime Minister to strongly target the state government over the SIR issue during his address.

The timing of the rally adds to its significance. The draft voter list for West Bengal is scheduled for publication on December 16, just four days before Modi’s rally. This gap has fueled speculation that voter list concerns will dominate the political narrative from the stage.

Taherpur falls under the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency and lies close to the international border. The area has a large Matua and refugee population, making it a crucial battleground. The Trinamool Congress has already held anti-SIR rallies in Nadia and North 24 Parganas to consolidate Matua votes.

PM Modi’s program is seen as a strategic move to simultaneously appeal to Matua voters and refugee communities, sharpening the political contest ahead of the 2026 polls.
