PM Modi Manipur visit marked his first trip to the violence-hit state in two years. Addressing people in Imphal, the Prime Minister highlighted his government’s development agenda and urged for peace after years of unrest.
“Imphal is the city of possibilities, and the 21st century belongs to the north-east,” PM Modi said. He announced projects worth thousands of crores to improve infrastructure, ease of living, and create jobs for Manipur’s youth.
Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023 left over 250 dead and displaced nearly 60,000 people. Many still live in temporary camps due to ongoing tensions. Modi called the violence “unfortunate” and urged both sides to honor the sacrifices of ancestors by choosing peace and development.
The Prime Minister said the government has approved 7,000 houses for displaced families and announced a ₹3,000 crore package for Manipur, including ₹500 crore specifically for rehabilitation. “Those who suffered from the violence should return to normal life as soon as possible. This is our top priority,” he added. PM Modi Manipur visit also recalled the state’s historical role in India’s independence, where the INA first unfurled the national flag.
